The countdown has started for my first ever Spring Fling. For those of you who don't know, 'Spring Fling is a vibrant visual art and craft open studios event covering the length and breadth of Dumfries and Galloway in South West Scotland. It's highly regarded as one of the UK's most successful contemporary visual art and craft events. Spring Fling is delivered by Upland, the visual art and craft development organisation for Dumfries and Galloway' (www.spring-fling.co.uk)
There will be 80 open studios this year, spread out over the region. To make exploring easier the studios are divided into different coloured routes. I'm on the blue route and I'm number 70.
Last year I spent a fantastic bank holiday weekend visiting many of the studios and exploring parts of the region I didn't know with fellow artist chum Rosie Dobson, who as a seasoned participant herself, was a wonderful companion and source of information. We met so many interesting and talented artists and enjoyed nosying around their studios....and sometimes their homes and gardens. Well, be honest, who's not fascinated to see how other people live?
As my studio is at the back of the house I had great plans about the garden being a blooming paradise in time for the end of May, but to be honest at the moment it's bloomin' mess. Or, conversely, a haven for wildlife. You choose.
